It's Flea Market, Not Free Market!

Recently, some of our friends opened a stall (a temporary shop) at a local flea market. Many people in Japan think it's "free market." But if you think about it, nothing's free. The people who open a stall have to pay money to the organizers, and the customers have to pay money for the things they buy.

The real meaning comes from flea (ノミ), a small insect that lives in clothes and or body hair and eats blood.

A Flea

Many flea-market stalls sell old clothes. If those clothes haven't been washed carefully, they might have fleas in them.

When I explained that to our friends, they started to feel...
Itchy!

Next time you go to a flea market, try NOT to think about the meaning too much!

Happy Pocky Day!

Today is Pocky Day! The reason November 11th is Pocky Day is pretty clear...
Today is an extra special Pocky Day because it's 11/11/11!
How do you celebrate Pocky Day? Well, that’s easy! Just buy some Pockies & share them with your family & friends!

Did you know that they have Pockies in other countries? About 15 years ago, I travelled through Europe with my sister. We took a 3-day bus tour to Pompeii & Amalfi from Rome. (Everybody should visit Pompeii & Amalfi for 3 days!) On the way to Pompeii, the bus stopped at a service station [gas stand] for a break. I felt like a snack – something chocolatey – so I went for a wander through the convenience store. That’s when I found the European version of Pockies…

“The Mikado” is a famous Gilbert & Sullivan musical that is popular in Europe. Maybe that’s why Glico changed the name for the European market.

Internationally, November 11th is Armistice Day (in some countries it’s known as “Poppy Day”), the memorial of the end of World War One (“The War to End All Wars” – Mmmmmm?). An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting. The armistice that ended World War One was signed at 11:00 am, on November the 11th (“the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"). People usually remember Armistice Day by stopping everything they are doing at exactly 11:00 am, and thinking quietly for 2 minutes about all the people who died in the war.

I guess you can do both today. At 11:00 am, stop whatever you’re doing and think about the uselessness of war and the sacrifices made by all of our ancestors in the name of peace. Sometime after that, cheer yourself up again by sharing some Pockies with your family and friends!

Halloween Party at Ola: The Photos

Ola's theme for this year's Halloween Party was "The 80's." Boy George, Michael Jackson, Madonna, MC Hammer, even an 80's Drag Queen (we nick-named her Priscilla. And, YES!, it's a HER!). What else could you ask for? Well... a red-Afroed Brazilian, a London bobby, a Mexican wrestler, a cowboy, Kamen Rider, a family of Transformers, a big-headed Death, lots of long legs in short, red mini skirts, witches, zombies, and a Big Mac with a large Coke to go! A good time was had by all!

Change = Transform

The above poster of Barack Obama (on the left) became very famous when he was campaigning to be President back in 2008. Recently, I found this parody poster (on the right). "To change" means "to transform." The robot in the poster is Optimus Prime, leader of the good Transformers.

I found the poster while I was researching this year's Halloween costumes for my family & I. This year we are...

Arcee, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime

Our costumes had their first outing last Sunday at...
the Be & Me 英会話 Club Halloween Picnic for kids

We're planning to make an appearance again this Saturday night, October 29th, at the Ola Halloween Party in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.

A Brush with Fame

このブログ の日 本語訳はこちら をクリックしてください!
On Saturday, September 10th, my family & I went to MateRock, a Tohoku-Earthquake charity concert organised by a group of Australians (and their Japanese family & friends) living in Hakuba, Japan. The top 5 acts were big-name performers from Australia. Of course, they were supported by some talented bands, drummers, and dancers from Japan.

There were a lot of Australians in the audience, including Olympic-gold-medal-winning speed skater Steve Bradbury (pictured above with my wife Mayumi). Steve's a little famous in Japan. They still show his winning race on kids' TV. If you meet a famous person, you can say you had "a brush with fame."

If you visit Mayumi's Blog , you can read more about Steve and watch a very interesting video about how he won the gold medal.

PUZZLE PROJECT Video

Here’s a short video of The PUZZLE PROJECT at KIX that I shot last Saturday night in Uni Pon Pon Kau Kau, a cool bar & gallery space in Umeda, Osaka. To see so many pieces by so many different artists on the walls at the same time was really impressive.

The music in this video is from “Mondo Erotica!” by Jun Miyake. I first heard this album while drinking at Uni Pon Pon Kau Kau. I was so impressed, I went out & bought it the very next day!

PUZZLE PROJECT at KIX now in Umeda

Back in March, I wrote about The Puzzle Project at KIX. Those puzzle pieces are now on show in Umeda, Osaka. Takashi Inaba, the organiser of the Puzzle Project, has a bar & gallery space in Umeda called Uni Pon Pon Kau Kau (06-6313-2644).

Be & Me & friends will be visiting the bar for drinks tonight from about 7:30 pm. If you can't join us tonight, the pieces will be on show until Tuesday, July 7th. If you can't make it to the bar, you can check it out here...

The Flying Spaghetti Monster

Recently, I was teaching some lessons in a kindergarten. One of the classrooms was decorated with the students' paintings of space. Most of the paintings featured a drawing of the student in an origami rocket with a background of stars. The above painting caught my eye because it had all the important things you expect to see in a painting of space - stars, a rocket, the Earth, the Sun, and The Flying Spaghetti Monster (explained in Japanese)!

That's right! The Flying Spaghetti Monster!

By the way, I think it's an interesting coincidence that believers in The Flying Spaghetti Monster also celebrate International Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day.

You can find an awful lot of Flying Spaghetti Monster videos on YouTube.

"A" is for Apple, "B" is for ...

I spotted this ABC frieze (a kind of wall decoration) in a kindergarten classroom on Monday. The "W" is probably for window. Mayumi thinks "X" is for "X-Files." Our friend Simon thinks it's Xenophobia (to be scared of strangers and/or foreigners).

Do you have any ideas?

And speaking of "X-Fools," check this out...

Japanese Earthquake Charity Concert this Weekend (May 28th & 29th)

This weekend (May 28th & 29th), there's a big international charity concert being held in Ogimachi Park, near Umeda. The event is scheduled to start at 11:00 am each day (but don't go too early -- these events usually take a couple of hours to warm up!) The concert is free. There will also be some stalls & information booths. Money raised through donations, t-shirt sales, and so on will be used to help to help the victims of the Tohoku Earthquake.

Here's a guide to some of the bands that will be playing...
It should be great fun! We'll be there from mid afternoon on Sunday. Call my cell phone if you can't find us.

Jazz Concert Next Saturday, April 30th!

I've often said one of the great things about living in Japan is all of the interesting people I've been able to meet. One of those people is professional jazz drummer Tommy Campbell. He has played with such jazz giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, & The Manhattan Transfer, just to name a few.

The great news is that he'll be having a concert at
Mr. Kelly's Jazz Bar in Umeda this coming Saturday, April 30th. Tommy will be performing with 2 vocalists, a pianist, and a bass player. If you're into jazz or you want to hear world-class jazz for the first time, this is a show you definitely do not want to miss. There will be two performances, one starting at 7:30 pm, the other starting at 9:15 pm. Tickets cost ¥ 4,000 each. Click on the following links to learn more...

Easter

This Sunday, April 24th, is Easter – the most important Christian holiday.

Easter is closely linked to the Jewish holiday of Passover (people often forget that Jesus was Jewish). The date of Passover is based on a lunar calendar so it changes every year. This year, Passover falls on April 23rd – tomorrow! Christians believe that Jesus Christ was executed [killed by the government] on Good Friday, the day before Passover. Two days later, he came back to life, proving to everyone that he was the Son of God.

Traditionally, children celebrated Easter by decorating hard-boiled eggs and then giving them to friends & family. Recently, children are given gifts of decorated chocolate eggs, rabbits, and chicks. They are told that the chocolates were delivered to their homes by the Easter Bunny early in the morning while they were still sleeping. Some people hold picnics that feature Easter-egg hunts. The picnic organizers hide decorated eggs around the picnic site. Children search for the eggs, trying to find as many as they can. One of the most famous Easter-egg hunts in the world is held at the American White House each year.

The eggs, rabbits & chicks are all symbols of new life used in ancient European spring festivals celebrated thousands of years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Even the name “Easter” comes from these ancient festivals. Eastre was the ancient German goddess of spring. When the Christians came to power in Europe, they took over the old spring festival. They said that the traditional symbols of new life (eggs, rabbits & chicks) now represent Jesus coming back to life.

Even if you’re not Christian, you can still celebrate Easter. It’s easy – just eat some chocolate!

It’s no secret that I like comic-book heroes – especially Batman! (Actually, I AM Batman!) Recently, I was talking to a student about the Batman movies. (She watched 5 of them in 2 weeks, which I think deserves some kind of medal!) At the end of the lesson, I asked her to make up her own comic-book hero. She created… By the way, did you know most famous comic-book heroes have a girl version? There's...
