My friend Dave sings in a rock band called Revolution.  Revolution are having a concert at The Blarney Stone, an Irish pub in Shinsaibashi, this Friday night.  I'm going to go.  Why don't you join me?

What time: The band will start to play around 9:00 pm.  I will be teaching until 9:30 pm, so I'll get there around 9:40 pm.  The band will play until very late, but I will leave at about 11:15 pm, in time to catch my last train.

Where: The Blarney Stone Irish Pub in Shinsaibashi, opposite the Comfort Hotel in Europa Street.
Click here for a map (in Japanese): http://www.the-blarney-stone.com/shinsaibashi/jmap.php

Good Night! I Love You!

Recently, Be &Me 英会話 Club started using "Excuse Me! A Little Book of Manners" by Karen Katz with our younger students. Yesterday, 2 of our students surprised me with their answer to one of the book's questions. It was so funny, I had to get them to reenact their response. These boys are always fun to teach!

We Have a Final Winner!

We have another winner in our Calvin & Hobbes's Summer Holiday Competition.  Our ex-student Noriko sent me an e-mail last night.  She noticed that the blank flag in the 9th frame of the original comic strip had been changed to a pirate flag in the Be & Me material.  Calvin & Hobbes are playing "pirates" instead of "Calvin Ball" in our material.  Noriko won a packet of Dark Chocolate Tim Tams (my favourite kind!).  Congratulations, Noriko!

That's the end of our contest.  Thanks for taking part, everyone!

By the way, Noriko's been featured on our Blog twice before.  The picture above comes from the time she wrote to President Obama.  Click on the following links...

And speaking of pirates, Noriko was once a pirate...

We Have Another Winner!

We have another winner in our Calvin & Hobbes's Summer Holiday Competition.  Our student Yoriko noticed that the toy guns in the 4th frame of the original comic strip had been removed in the Be & Me material.  Calvin & Hobbes are playing "hide &  seek" instead of "cops & robbers" in our material.  Yoriko won a packet of Rum & Raisin Tim Tams!  Congratulations, Yoriko!

There is still 1 pack of Tim Tams waiting for the student or ex-student who can tell me what other frame has been altered.  Good luck!

Mexican Food & Live Music in Shinsaibashi/Namba this Saturday Night (August 31st)

My friend Simon is in a rock band called "Simon's Salty Nuts."  They are having a concert this Saturday, August 31st, in Namba, from 9:30 pm.  Simon's band plays mainly 80's & 90's rock.  It's not heavy and not too loud!

I'm planning to have dinner at Ola Tacos Bar (06-6251-2082) before I go there.  If you'd like to join me, come to Be & Me school at 7:00 pm (don't be late!) or meet me at Ola any time between 7:00 to 8:30 pm.  If you're coming after 8:30pm, it's best to go straight to The Little Clover Irish Bar (080-3785-0454) in Namba.
Hope to see you on Saturday night!
Here's the official poster & the important links again...

Bling

"Bling" or "bling bling" means very bright & shiny jewelery or decoration.  The word comes from the imagined sound of light bouncing of diamonds, like "pika pika" (ピカピカ) in Japanese.  Recently, one of our students came to class with a blinged-out phone.  Check it out!  Isn't it beautiful?!

Calvin & Hobbes's Summer Holiday

About 17 years ago, when I was working at another school, a fellow teacher gave me a photocopy of a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.  He suggested it was good practice at answering "What are they doing now?" and "What have they just done?" questions, as well as a great conversation starter for talking about childhood summer holidays.  He was right!  I have been using it ever since!

The "Calvin & Hobbes's Summer Holiday" strip has become an important part of our lesson materials.  If you've studied at Be & Me Eikaiwa any time in the last 14 years, chances are you've been given a photocopy of the photocopy of the photocopy that was given to me.

Yesterday, I was very surprised to see that very same strip in the newspaper -- in colour!  It looks good, don't you think?

COMPETITION The first student (past or present) to tell me which frame has been altered on the Be & Me material will win a packet of Tim Tams.  You can e-mail me, post a comment on the Blog or FaceBook pages, or tell me in class.  Good luck!

By the way, one of the best things you can do in Japan in summer is visit the Awa Dance Festival (Awa Odori) in Tokushima City from August 12th to 15th.  I took the above photo on one of my 5 (6?) visits to this great festival.  If you haven't been yet, do yourself a favour and get down there this year!

I've Been Flat Out Like a Lizard Drinking!

Sorry it’s been sooooo long since my last entry – I’ve been flat out like a lizard drinking!

僕は ” flat out like a lizard drinking ” でした!

What does that mean? Read the following to find out! It's a bit long, but it's not difficult.

In “standard” English (there’s really no such thing!), to be flat out means to be trying your hardest or to be very busy.

Here are some examples…

例文です

Even though he was running flat out (trying his hardest), he didn’t win the race.

We were so flat out (busy) at work, I didn’t have time for lunch.

To be flat out also means to lie very flat on something.

Here’s an example of that meaning…

He was lying flat out on the sofa, fast asleep.

It’s a curious fact that lizards can’t swallow because of the inside shape of their mouths. When a lizard drinks, it has to push itself against the ground – lie flat out – and flick water down it throat with its tongue.

In Australia, we like to make our English sound more interesting by using unexpected comparisons or by replacing commonly used words with well-known but unexpected ones. When we’re very busy we often say, “I’m flat out (busy) like a lizard drinking (lying very flat).” This comparison doesn’t make any sense, but we Australians think it makes our speech sound more colourful.

”とても忙しい”と言いたいとき、” I'm flat out (忙しいの意) like a lizard drinking (べったり伏した状態の意) .

Next time you feel you have too much to do, say “I’m flat out like a lizard drinking!” It’ll make you smile, and that’ll make your work just a little easier to get through!

” I'm flat out like a lizard drinking! ”

By the way, the above photo was taken at the the Kumata Jinja's summer festival.  It's my favourite danjiri (portable shrine) festival in Japan.  There are many other more famous festivals, but they are too big!  The Kumata Jinja festival is a really friendly, local festival where you can actually reach out & touch the shrines as they pass.  This year, the main night of the festival is on Saturday, July 13th.  I hope to see you there!
